A bachelor’s or higher degree in audiology, bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, biophysics, biostatistics, chemical engineering, chemistry, community health, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental health, environmental planning, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, genetics, geochemistry, health physics, human development, hydrology, industrial hygiene, medical science, medical technology, molecular biology, nursing, occupational health, petroleum engineering, physics, public health, or toxicology; including or supplemented by 8 semester credit hours in chemistry.
If chosen, you may, at the agency’s discretion, be appointed to a higher level.
For Trainee 2 you must also have one year of professional industrial hygiene experience.
For the Full Performance Level you must also have two years of professional industrial hygiene experience.
Physical/Medical Requirements Your physical and medical condition will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable
accommodation. The physical/medical standards include evaluation of vision, color vision, hearing, cardiovascular system, and respiratory system.
Duties Description
Under the supervision of the Associate Industrial Hygienist, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Assists in the coordination of the Statewide Employee Safety and Health Programs such as Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Personal Protective Equipment, Respirable Crystalline Silica, etc…
Conducts occupational health inspections at NYSDOT work sites to identify associate health hazards, work processes, and evaluate materials and/or violations such as noise, dusts, gases, fumes, and pathogenic organisms
Conducts Industrial Hygiene measurements such as air monitoring, interprets laboratory results, calibrates instruments, and prepares reports
Has an understanding and interpretation of the OSHA standards and other associated regulations to provide consultation to various NYSDOT personnel and work with other stakeholders such as NYS Dept. of Labor and other NYS agencies
Assists with various other health hazards such as maintaining the drinking water standards
May assist with working with other consultants and contractors in addressing occupational health hazards
Immediate/emergency assignments may occur or assist the Employee Safety and Health Reps
Significant/Frequent Travel is involved as this position covers statewide
NOTE: As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
