This position exists to perform tasks to protect and carry out the maintenance of grounds, facilities, and equipment so that the park’s natural resources are preserved, and park facilities are adequately maintained for the enjoyment of park visitors. This is a seasonal (approximately April 1st through October 31st), part-time/ 90% (36 hours/week) position at Great River Bluffs State Park, near Winona, MN. Days and hours of work may vary and will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Perform grounds maintenance (i.e. plant seeds and/or lay sod, rake, mow, trim, prune shrubs and vines on roadsides trails, picnic grounds, etc.; weed control, remove trees, stumps and tree limbs and operate chipper, plant trees and shrubs, operate tree planter, install erosion control structures; replace and/or install guard posts; repair/groom hike/ski trails; remove snow/spread sand; clean fire grills and haul debris; operate trucks, tractor, mowers, chainsaws, tree planters and stump grinders, grade/repair roads and parking areas, maintain inventory/coordinate the supply of replacement for all park signs, assist in carrying out resource management projects, etc.
Perform buildings maintenance so that buildings are clean, safe, and attractive, includes contact station, administrative structures, restroom/shower buildings, etc. May include removing/replacing screens & storm windows, repair and paint; replace/repair doors, windows, shingles; paint structures, clean buildings (windows, walls, ceilings, woodwork, floors, and fixtures) and stock supplies, stock wood as needed in picnic shelter and visitor center.
Perform equipment maintenance and do minor repairs on shop facilities, such as replacing spark plugs and other small parts on mowers, chainsaws, vehicles, etc. per maintenance schedule or as needed; lubricate equipment as recommended; clean equipment and tools and store properly each day; clean shop floor and maintain order of equipment and tools; drive vehicles to pick up park supplies and assist with receiving freight shipments; assist with training other staff (seasonal) in safe and efficient use of equipment.
Perform facilities repair, i.e. repair and/or replace fixtures (sinks, faucets, toilets; dig with pick and shovel and/or power equipment to locate broken water pipes; minor road and parking lot repair such as patching potholes, spreading gravel, shoulder maintenance, culvert repair, etc.; monitor sewer system to ensure continuous operation meeting State Health Codes and PCA requirements; maintain picnic area facilities such as tables, grills, drinking fountains; assist with pollution control monitoring project and take and record weekly readings.
Perform other duties and miscellaneous tasks as needed, i.e. sell permits/provide visitors information about the park; assist with enforcement of park rules and regulations; help cover the Visitor Center, as needed.
Safety and Ethics; Perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe and healthful manner, following correct procedures and using required personal protective equipment; comply with all department health and security policies and procedures; support a proactive safety culture; inform supervisor of unsafe working conditions, etc. Work as a team member; respond with tact and diplomacy when dealing with customers and co-workers; follow established policies, guidelines and procedures; participate in required training; present a positive public relations image, etc.
Knowledge of cleaning methods, techniques, materials, and equipment sufficient to prepare cleaning solutions and compounds, operate cleaning equipment, and perform minor repairs.
Knowledge of basic building fixtures (doors, locks, windows) and ground structures (fences, signs, flag poles) sufficient to perform minor maintenance and installation work.
Knowledge of hand and power tools sufficient to safely and effectively operate and perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs.
Ability to operate motor vehicle, tractor, heavy equipment, snow groomer, ATV, chain saw, tree planter, stump remover, lawn mower, small hand tools and other equipment and tools sufficient to perform assigned duties correctly and safely.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions on labels, in instruction manuals and procedures, etc., sufficient to use materials/chemicals correctly and safely.
Ability and willingness to work alone at night, including in remote areas.
Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees.
Ability to operate a phone, two way radio, computer and other office equipment.
Organizational and interpersonal skills sufficient to work as a productive member of a team.
Ability to provide written information and instructions to the public and other employees.
Experience operating and performing routine maintenance on small engines, vehicles and other equipment and tools.
First aid, AED, and CPR training. S130/S190 Fire Training.
Recreation Dynamics Experience.
Completed Security Ranger Training or other security training and experience.
Knowledge of state park facilities, rules, and policies.
Experience/certification for the operation of chainsaws.
Trail building and maintenance experience.
Occasionally lifting articles such as 50 pound bags of feed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require moving or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
