NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
The Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City’s streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Regional & Strategic Planning (R&SP) is a sub-division of TPM, consisting of: Strategic Planning, focused on accessibility and equity enhancements within agency initiatives, as well as regional planning in coordination with the Metropolitan Planning Organization; Freight Mobility, responsible for advancing policies and programs that improve truck delivery efficiency while also reducing the impacts of trucks on communities and infrastructure; Alternative Fuels Program and Electric Vehicle Policy, responsible for developing and implementing policies, incentives and funding mechanisms to increase adoption of clean vehicles and fuels in support of NYC law and Mayoral directives, and Special Projects, responsible for fostering data-informed transportation planning and developing, implementing, and evaluating projects that improve NYC residents’ access to sustainable transportation options.
R&SP is seeking a Mobility Program Coordinator for the Freight Mobility (FM) Unit. The FM unit is responsible for developing freight-supportive street infrastructure projects and transformative programs and policies to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of goods movement in NYC.
Reporting to the Freight Mobility Director, and working closely with the Deputy Directors, the Freight Mobility Program Coordinator (FMPC) will support key community, local business, and industry stakeholder outreach to inform project planning, design, and implementation. The FMPC will oversee cross-functional unit-wide projects or initiatives, reviewing, designing, and executing capacity-building activities. Additional support tasks include strategic planning, recruiting, and program management to inform executive decision-making, planning financial and operational activities. Working with DOT’s communications team, the FMPC will also develop and manage social media, website, newsletter, and other content to support outreach on freight initiatives.
Working in a collaborative environment and with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Mobility Program Coordinator will work on grant-based programs and projects that support DOT’s mission to promote equity and sustainability in the movement of people and goods in New York City. Key responsibilities include a) Supporting diverse outreach efforts for sub-division projects, facilitate coordination of community meetings with consultants, internal and external agency partners. b) Organizing and tracking engagement with regional stakeholders and identify new opportunities or priorities to broaden stakeholder engagement. c) Participating in public engagements and appearances, with the development of written materials, briefings, presentations, reports, and other work products as needed. d) Assisting in new grant applications and grant reporting including convening meetings with community stakeholders regarding any concerns and receive feedback. e) Performing demographic and geographic analyses to orient research and outcomes to distinctive communities. f) Utilizing qualitative and quantitative survey methods to inform new programs in demand management and tailor services offered to diverse communities and affected stakeholders. g) Performing demographic and geographic analyses to orient research and outcomes to distinctive communities. h) Performing analyses to communicate key trends impacting New York City’s transportation network and creating live online reporting systems with this information at the neighborhood, borough, and Citywide scale. i) Evaluating neighborhood retail changes as related to on-street transportation projects and programs.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
Preferred Skills
The preferred candidate is a well-organized self-starter with excellent project management and communications skills. In addition, the candidate should have: Demonstrated expertise in data synthesis and visualization for development of public information materials. Experience using quantitative and qualitative research methods to support outreach efforts; participating in public engagement events including listening to residents; Community Boards, and forming consensus; Experience learning and developing approaches to community engagement in a complex work environment; A background or demonstratable interest in planning and policy to advance socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable and equitable urban development, and knowledge of relevant transportation industry standards or policies is preferred.
