Job Description
The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) advises the Mayor of the City of New York on criminal justice policy. MOCJ develops and implements strategies, with partners inside and outside government, to reduce crime and incarceration and to promote fairness and legitimacy. MOCJ works with law enforcement, city agencies, non-profits, foundations, and others to implement data-driven strategies that address current crime conditions, prevent offending, and build the strong neighborhoods that ensure enduring safety.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Executive Director for Policy & Justice Operations, the Associate Counsel will assist in all policy matters that affect MOCJ, including the planning, operationalizing, and execution of MOCJ policy initiatives and programs. The Associate Counsel must be an effective self-starter, possessing both the capacity for independence and the ability to work cooperatively to advance the goals of the administration. The Associate Counsel responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assisting and supporting the Policy & Justice Operations team in the operationalization of policy projects;
Providing legal, strategic, and operational support across MOCJ’s portfolios;
Researching, initiating, developing, and assisting in the execution of policy projects, both with a team and individually; and
Supporting the Policy & Justice Operations team, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either “2” or “3” below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
Preferred Skills
– A JD from an accredited educational institution and admission to the NY State Bar – A minimum of 3 years of professional experience as an attorney or the equivalent – Excellent organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, problem solve, balance competing priorities, pay close attention to detail, and work independently as well as with teams in a fast-paced/high-pressure environment – Attention to detail and the ability to give and receive clear direction/instruction – Effective and creative leadership ability with the capacity to work both independently and cooperatively to implement key strategies, evaluate new policies and analyze new legislation and – Experience supervising projects and working with a principal.
