
New York City DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 11,000 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.
The DOC seeks to hire part-time laborers who will be responsible for assisting in the management of Hart Island, including activities related to the burial of the remains of deceased. Candidates assigned to Hart Island will be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE); they will also be responsible for ordering and arranging for the delivery of supplies and materials to Hart Island. Candidates will be responsible for unloading cases off trucks; engraving caskets with identifying markings using a router; manually placing cases into resting place, including stacking. Other day to day function may include moving, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects; hauling, loading and unloading of materials, mixing and placing of concrete, and other work of a heavy nature. Additionally, Laborers will perform laboring work such as moving, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects; make use of hand or power-driven equipment in the performance of these duties. This includes other work in connection with the care of grounds. Assisting in the provision of appropriate care for plantings and lawns. Workers will be performing routine maintenance and minor repair work.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position.
2. There are certain medical and physical requirements.
License Requirements
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
Additional Information
Equipment will be provided to workers, including necessary safety equipment such as tyvex suits, goggles and rubber gloves.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
