Grade 14: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene, industrial safety, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, public health, or a closely related field, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field. 30 graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene, industrial safety, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, public health, or a closely related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in industrial hygiene, such as incident prevention, occupational safety management, or devising protective processes and controls to keep workers safe; Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential; broad knowledge of effects of chemicals and materials on the body and environment; experience with analysis of toxicological and epidemiological data to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace hazards; effective design controls to address hazards; knowledge of biological hazard management; knowledge of federal and state occupational safety and health regulations; good communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills; and strong technical writing skills.
Duties Description
The Research Scientist will participate in all phases of industrial hygiene research, intervention, control, and field studies in the Center for Environmental Health’s Bureau of Occupational Health & Injury Prevention. The incumbent will work under the direction of senior research staff to contribute directly to problem identification, background research and support, and evidence-based proposals and recommendations. Activities will also include identification of workplace hazards, development of research proposals and workplace evaluation plans (design and execution), collection of exposure data, evaluation of control measures, and the interpretation and presentation of results.
