Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be reachable for appointment on the current Civil Service eligible list for the title, or
Reassignment – Currently in the title and an employee of DEC, or
Reinstatement Eligible – Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis, or
Transfer Eligible – One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 16 or higher and either:
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below; or
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as a Public Participation Specialist 1, Environmental Educator 2, Environmental Program Specialist 1.
55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.
Minimum qualifications for candidates eligible for 55-b/55-c appointment or 70.4 transfer:
Either 1. A bachelor’s degree in environmental planning; environmental science; environmental studies; natural, biological or physical science; civil, environmental, or geological engineering; public administration; public relations; political science; urban planning; urban studies; communications; or journalism; AND TWO YEARS of professional experience in developing technical presentations; planning and facilitating public meetings; presenting training or educational materials; or implementing public involvement programs;
OR 2. An associate’s degree in environmental planning; environmental science; environmental studies; natural, biological or physical science; civil, environmental, or geological engineering; public administration; public relations; political science; urban planning; urban studies; communications; or journalism; AND FOUR YEARS of professional experience in developing technical presentations; planning and facilitating public meetings; presenting training or educational materials; or implementing public involvement programs;
Substitution: A Masters’ degree in environmental planning; environmental science; environmental studies; natural, biological or physical science; civil, environmental, or geological engineering; public administration; public relations; political science; urban planning; urban studies; communications; or journalism can substitute for one of year of experience.
Duties Description
This position will serve as the Division of Lands and Forests’ (DLF) Web Content Coordinator, responsible for managing DLF’s web content development, ensuring web content is up to date and conforms with DEC’s website standards, and making sure appropriate staff, management, and legal personnel have approved all updates. This position will also work with DLF staff, and other divisions as needed, to develop and implement outreach on Lands and Forests topics, including but not limited to, invasive species, forest health, private forest management, forest preserve, and state land management.
Tasks include:
Develop, post, review, and maintain content for the DLF on the agency’s public and internal websites.
Develop social media content in coordination with DLF programs, and track statistics.
Develop outreach and educational handouts to support DLF programs.
Develop articles about DLF topics for Conservationist magazine.
Serve as the DLF’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) Coordinator by reviewing requests for information and coordinating with the appropriate staff responsible for the content to respond to the request in a timely manner.
Coordinate monthly DEC Delivers/GovDelivery digital newsletter on forests, plants, and land conservation.
Coordinate development of DLF’s staff newsletter, covering recent topics relevant to staff, and post it on DEC’s internal SharePoint site.
Respond to requests for information from the public.
Develop and conduct other outreach activities as directed, including but not limited to public presentations, tabling events, and classroom activities.
Additional Comments
Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel and overnight travel may be required.
