Minimum Qualifications For Provisional Appointment: One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Environmental Radiation Specialist 2.

Additional Language For Non-Competitive Promotion: If there are no more than three individuals interested from among the interested qualified candidates for this position, it may be possible to make a permanent appointment via non-competitive promotion.

Duties Description
The Environmental Radiation Specialist 3 (ERS 3) position serves as the Chief of the Radiation Control Permit Section, which is responsible for protecting public health and safety from exposure to radioactive material released to the environment. The ERS3 is responsible for the management and supervision of the Part 380 radiation control permit and compliance program, and ERS1 and ERS2 Section staff. The ERS3 is responsible for ensuring that the permit and inspection program adequately implements DEC’s portion of New York’s Agreement State program, and that the Part 380 regulations remain compatible with federal USNRC regulations, as required by the Agreement.
These duties include ensuring that the program’s established permit and inspection policies and procedures are maintained compatible with federal, state, and Department requirements, and that staff conduct the Section’s work in accordance with these policies and procedures. The ERS3 is responsible for training staff regarding implementation of the program’s policies and procedures and the underlying regulatory and technical basis of those procedures, reviewing all work products to ensure consistency with established procedures, and monitoring staff performance.
 
Additional Comments
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
