SALARY: $46,189 with subsequent increases to $57,73

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Ithaca Fire Department is a progressive fire department with
a mission to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. In this position, you will help
serve that mission as the first point of contact for the Fire Department. The primary responsi-
bilities include answering phone calls and greeting visitors at the headquarters location on
Green Street in Ithaca, NY. As the Administrative Assistant you will assist with the Fire Depart-
ment by scheduling Fire Inspections and Public Education events, collect and process fire per-
mit paperwork and the associated costs/fees, as well as answering other general inquiries and
completing general administrative tasks. The Administrative Assistant also acts as back-up to
the Administrative Coordinator and will be trained in basic financial and payroll functions as
needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A. Possession of an Associate’s degree and two (2) years of clerical, administrative or office
management experience which shall have involved maintaining electronic records in a da-
tabase or spreadsheet application and preparing reports; or
B. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four
(4) years of clerical, administrative or office management experience which shall have in-
volved maintaining electronic records in a database or spreadsheet application and prepar-
ing reports; or
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and
(B).
Note: College degrees must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a re-
gional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Depart-
ment of Education and/or U.S. Secretary of Education. If an applicant’s degree was awarded by
an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, the applicant must provide
independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: There are no residency requirements for this position.

APPOINTMENT STATUS AND EXAM REQUIREMENT: This will be a provisional appointment
pending the results of a civil service examination to be scheduled at a later date. Permanent ap-
pointment will be dependent upon the candidate’s exam score.
