This is a recreation position responsible for the administrative oversight of all community athletics programs in the Bureau of Recreation and Youth Services, and for the supervision of staff, programs and activities. The person in this position coordinates required sports related training for all recreation staff and volunteers. Direct and indirect supervision is exercised over lower level recreation staff. General direction is received from higher level management. Related work is performed as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.
Typical Work Activities
Organizes, administers, and evaluates community wide athletic programs;
Serves as a resource and provides support to recreation staff in the coordination of community-wide leagues;
Assists with the supervision, operation and administration of community-wide athletic/sports events, logistics, and leagues;
Develops new programs, activities, and special events based on needs analysis, at the request of special groups and community organizations, and in conjunction with other City-wide special events;
Assists in the development and implementation of training related to staff and volunteer development;
Develops recruitment methods for part-time and seasonal staff;
Instructs and supervises professional staff in the implementation of programs and new policies;
Works with program participants, schools, community groups and neighborhood organizations to determine community needs and desires when developing programs;
Implements and enforces City and Bureau safety policy through regular inspections of sports complex;
Writes reports, correspondence, training manuals, and procedures;
Prepares and monitors program contracts and service agreements according to standard procedures;
Identifies the athletic needs and desires of the community by analyzing usage statistics and previous community experience with various programs.
High school diploma or G.E.D, PLUS:
A. Bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Leisure Services; Business Administration; Physical Education; or Art, Drama, Dance, or Music Education; PLUS two (2) years of experience supervising athletic and *aquatic programs and activities AND **administrative experience preparing budgets, contracts and service agreements.
B. Associate’s degree in Recreation/Leisure Services or any Bachelor’s degree plus three (3) years of experience as defined in A. above;
C. Four (4) years of experience as defined in A. above.
**This experience can be obtained in A. or separately.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :
Possession of a valid N.Y.S. Class D driver’s license. This license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
